IndustryNext Mile Podcast: freight, AI and the road ahead
Next Mile is a SmartLoads podcast about the people, skills and technology moving freight forward. Meet host Miles and start with the first trailer today.
Next Mile is a practical podcast for people building a career in freight and the teams adapting to AI. In the trailer, host Miles introduces the show: how AI can make work clearer, how agents can focus on better opportunities, and why technology only matters when it helps people move freight well.
Freight is changing quickly. The work still depends on people who can listen, make judgment calls and build relationships. But the tools around them are changing: AI can organize an inbox, spot the next action, answer an overflow call, turn a document into a usable load and make the right information easier to see.
Next Mile Podcast is where we talk about that shift in plain language. The show is a SmartLoads initiative hosted by Miles, built for future freight agents, people working in brokerages and anyone who wants to understand where the industry is headed.

The trailer introduces the core idea: technology should make the people in freight more effective. It should not turn the work into a black box.
What we will cover
The first season is built around the questions people are already asking:
- AI visibility: What should an agent or broker actually see first, and how can AI reduce noise instead of creating another dashboard?
- Agentic workflow: How can an intelligent assistant carry routine work from intake through delivery while people keep the decisions that need judgment?
- Becoming a freight agent: What skills matter, what the job really involves and how someone can take a credible first step.
- Working with brokerages: How agents, operations teams, carriers and customers fit together when a load has to move today.
- Robotics and distribution: How automation in manufacturing, warehouses, terminals and shipbuilding will change the freight patterns and roles around them.
A practical lens on AI
AI is useful in freight when it makes a real handoff better. That might mean reading an inbound email into a structured load, helping an agent compare options, or catching a carrier call that would otherwise be missed.
SmartLoads calls this SI, or Super Intelligence: AI that understands the context of the work and helps people act on it. The goal is not to hand every decision to a bot. The goal is to protect time for the conversations, negotiations and customer relationships that move the business forward.
For a concrete example, read what missed carrier calls cost a freight brokerage and how SI answers them.
